The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress.
Joseph Joubert, French Philosopher (1754-1824)
Today Tallahassee, Tomorrow the World
As we speak a group of us in the quaint southern village of Tallahassee are in our second season of using a bit of mouth-to-mouth to breathe the spirit of the Village Square back into America today. There has been good food available and absolutely no hitting involved.
Don’t be left out. Email us at tallahassee@tothevillagesquare.org
Getting Involved in Tallahassee’s Village Square
Board of Directors
Joining The Village Square Board of Directors are community leaders from across Tallahassee, both Democrats and Republicans, who believe that disagreement, dialog, and discernment of fact are important to common sense problem solving. Our board is represented by a City and County Commissioner, educators, business owners, religious and other non-profit leaders, and other professionals. We actively sought diverse opinions and philosophies, in fact, the board includes leading public voices on each side of our recent community debate on coal.

Founders
Founders are the lifeblood of The Village Square. Composed of about 50 to 75 people invited by the Board of Directors, the Founders create the culture of civility at The Square, primarily by showing up, debating issues, making friends and having fun. Tough job, isn’t it? Find our Founders HERE.

Teen 2Like to talk about issues in a civilized way? The Teen 2 is getting up and running this year. Teen 2 members provide support for Village Square events. Participants will earn bright futures scholarship hours for college.
Interested? Contact Teen 2 immediate past-Chair Eden Joyner or 2008-2009 Teen 2 Chair Michael Dobson at teensquare@tothevillagesquare.org
Student VolunteersAre you a student in Tallahassee who needs community service hours to get into a good college so that you too can grow up to be a talking, thinking agreeable disagree-er?
Well, you can be an apprentice. You know that’s what they called young people in colonial days who did all the work so that the blacksmiths and silversmiths and bakers could talk and read and think and eat fattening food and drink. Some good ideas are just timeless. Email us at cheaplabor@tothevillagesquare.org
Certain we’re onto something, though not quite ready to go global, we are now officially entertaining the notion of adding a couple new Village Squares in cities all ready to put on their boots and roll into unknown territory, wagon train style, right behind us. Find out what that means, get the latest on our expansion and find a link to an online application HERE. We are particularly interested in adding new Florida Village Square cities, but are prepared to be impressed by anyone.
Interested in getting civil dialog going in your very own village, but more the type to come along later with the women, children & fine china? Stay in the loop on our exceedingly more polite re-do of manifest destiny by emailing us at westwardho@tothevillagesquare.org . You can also sign up to receive newsletters HERE (click to receive the “Expansion” emails when prompted.) We’ll let you know when we’re ready for a thoroughly civilized expansion.
Taking a pass for now on the whole enchilada of building a new Village Square but interested in dipping your toe in the water of improved civility? Take a look at our self-generated Village Square programming, “The Village Circle,” HERE.
Whichever way you go, they’ll probably give you a key to the city.
