Getting local on the property tax issue

On June 19, The Village Square hosted a conversation about the local effects of property tax changes proposed by the Florida legislature. Joining Founders and board members were County Commissioner John Dailey, City of Tallahassee Budget Director Raoul Lavin and
Leon County Budget Director Alan Rozenzweig. We were also pleased to be joined by Chuck Hefren and Ben Browning of Florida Tax Watch.

Despite a wide range of politicalideology at the table, there were themes that seemed to draw some level ofconsensus:

1. There are opportunities created by the property tax changes tocarefully analyze functional consolidation and how effectively money is being spent. This exercise tends to not occur when funding is readily available. Necessity can, in fact, be the mother of invention.

2. We’re all against waste and inefficiencies in government.

3. Funding cuts, in particular if the amendment passes, will result in real cuts in services to the local population. It will be important to accurately and thoroughly educate voters on what they should expect with passage of the amendment.

Stay tuned for a future public forum, hosted by The Village Square, on this important topic.

Meet the Village Square Founders

Meet the Village Square Founders

We began The Village Square with a
board of directors -
let’s call it a twelve person
“circle of civility.”

While we think it’s a great twelve, we thought there might not be quite enough of us to actually make the pigs fly. So we invited another 60 people (of course, half conservative and half liberal) to join us as “Founders.” eLike the Jefferson, Adams, Franklin crowd, only with slightly more up-to-date clothing. Click
here to see a list of our Founders.

We didn’t shy away from inviting people who were “very” conservative or or “very” liberal. We invited both community leaders and average moms and pops.

We’re just now getting to know each other and we’re dipping our toes into the waters of civil conversation. We’ll let you know how it’s going.
