The Death Penalty: Evolving Issues in Florida

A two-hour forum that will include participation by FSU President Emeritus, former Dean of the College of Law and former American Bar Association President Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte; former Florida Supreme Court Justice Raoul Cantero; 2nd Judicial Circuit Judge Janet Ferris (retired); 18th Judicial Circuit Judge O.H. Eaton (retired); Harry Shorstein, former Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney; Mike Minerva, CEO, Innocence Project of Florida and former 2nd Judicial Circuit Public Defender; Mark Olive, renowned capital case litigator, and Les Garringer, executive director of the Florida Innocence Commission and former Monroe County Judge.

The nation was stunned in 2007 when a mentally disturbed student at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., shot 32 people on campus to death and wounded 25 before taking his own life.

A state-appointed review panel after the massacre criticized the Virginia Tech administration for failing to move more swiftly following the initial shootings. The tragedy resulted in changes to Virginia state gun laws and approval of the first major federal gun legislation in more than a decade.

The incident also produced an even closer partnership between the university and the Town of Blacksburg, particularly in the area of public safety. (more…)

Moviegoers will have the chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film version of the groundbreaking Broadway musical West Side Story with a one-night only screening in theaters nationwide
 
Socialist movers, Ayn Rand shakers, and every politico in between should do us a favor and see it.
 
Most performing arts fans know that West Side Story is a scene-for-scene retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story.  The 20th century makeover of Shakespeare’s tragic tale of star-crossed lovers separated by their warring clans is set in a 1950s Manhattan slum.  (more…)

This morning’s Tallahassee Democrat ran an op-ed by Kent Miller and Ray Bellamy describing the details of a gift made to FSU’s Colleges of Business and Economics by BB&T that has very specific requirements about course content that promote the ideas of Ayn Rand.
